Research from Lost and Found: The Younger Unchurched and Churches that Reach Them

Arguments

I've noticed a trend among many people today of no longer discussing but arguing.  They insult or call names or emote or gainsay or play the victim or offer cryptic utterances that must seem like slam dunk responses to the ones making them. But none of these are really beneficial. Which got me thinking of this sketch from Monty Python.

HERO

All young men should pick this one up and read.  Ask Steve if you have any questions.

You already know it’s not easy being a single man in this culture today. But it is easy to be overwhelmed, to feel helpless and hopeless about living by God’s high standards for singles. It’s easy to cave in to the pressures of this sex-soaked world and accept defeat—blaming the media, the culture, even girlfriends who don’t know how tough it can be.

But many men have read books like Every Young Man’s Battle and Tactics and have committed themselves to stand strong and pure in the power of God, and to go on the offensive against the onslaught of negative stereotypes. Some have suffered. Some have fallen. But many have experienced victory—and you can be among them.

What makes those committed men so desirable to women? Be Her Hero is their motto. From best-selling author Fred Stoeker, along with his son Jasen, come the straightforward insight and real-life examples you’re looking for to help you take personal purity to its logical conclusion. Here’s straight truth with irrefutable evidence of what makes an ultimate hero to women who long for men of faith—men who stand by their convictions and make their world a safer and better place.

Are you ready to accept the challenge?

Fred Stoeker is a best-selling author of several books, including Every Young Man’s Battle and Tactics, the president of Living True Ministries, and a popular conference speaker who challenges men to become sexually pure, to reconnect in true intimate relationship with their wives, and to train their sons to become godly men. A graduate of Stanford University, Fred lives in Des MoinesIowa with his wife, Brenda, and their children.

Mike Yorkey, a writer living in EncinitasCalifornia, has collaborated with Fred Stoeker in all his books for the Every Man’s series.

Jasen Stoeker is a popular conference speaker who challenges young men to be heroic in their relationships with women and to be a Christian, rather than just seem like one. Jasen is a graduate of Iowa State University with degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science and now lives in MinneapolisMN, with his wife Rose.

Top Church Blogs

Kent Shaffer of Church Relevance did some research and compiled a list of the most read church blogs.  Kent describes the list this way, "some focus exclusively on ministry, while others are more like theology blogs.  Regardless of how you label them, these are the world's most popular church blogs written by many of today's most influential church leaders, theologians and Christ Followers."

Converts To What?

So it's -15 below and I'm trying to stay warm by catching up on some reading.  The great Ed Stetzer has written another great piece on being focused on the Mission, but also calling people to Christ.  Read it here.  Great reminder Ed.  Thanks!

Rick Responds

As you probably heard, Rick Warren was asked to deliver the invocation at the presidential inauguration. After that announcement, the media kicked in to full fury surrounding that decision.

Rick Warren just recorded this video response to explain to his congregation some of the recent firestorm surrounding his decision to accept Barack Obama's invitation. He covers three main areas:

1) Rick re-states his long-held view on the Biblical definition of marriage.

2) Secondly, he discusses civil rights and why he believes no American should be discriminated against.

3) Rick discusses why he accepted the invitation to the inaugration. He also talks about how he will respond to the many attacks and accusations appearing in the news, and why it is vitally important to return love for hate.

I love Rick's heart, his backbone, his integrity and his leadership. Do you agree? What do you think about Rick's decision to speak at the inauguration?

Prophetic Words from Penn

Something to think about.  From the awesome Ed Stetzer:

"If there is a trend and churches do grow during hard times, the growth should come through evangelism. And, it appears to me that Christians today are less focused on evangelism today than they have been in times past-- with some considering evangelism to be too impolite or old school. They believe it is better to "show" and not "tell" (when it should be both).

So, this video from Penn (of Penn and Teller) is worth your time:"

Penn says:

"I don't respect people who don't proselytize. If you believe that there's a heaven and hell, and people could be going to hell, and you think, 'Well, it's not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward'... How much do you have to hate somebody not to proselytize?"

What If Worship Was Like an NBA Game

Hurry up and wait!!!!!

It is prime time hunting for bow hunters with rifle season right around the corner.  I have seen trucks with hundreds of pounds of corn in the back, good thing we can only place 2 gallons a day per 40.  Stores with hunting gear are busy and people are sighting in the rifles.  Season is opening soon.

I am bow hunting and I have a morning ritual that is automatic this time of year.  Get up, make coffee, get lunches ready, the kids some food, drink some coffee, check the weather, make sure the wood stove is going, drink some more coffee and finally shower to get out to the woods.  I drop the kids off at school and get to the woods as fast as I can without getting a speeding ticket.  I get dressed and head into the stand moving quickly and quietly so as not to spook anything since it is daylight already.  I get settled in the stand and then try to relax.  My whole morning has been hurry, hurry, hurry now wait.

I can sit in my stand for 5 hours and it feels as if time flies.  I can sit there in eager expectation of what might be following a doe, or just all of a sudden appear.  What I am realizing is that I am all to willing to wait and be still for a deer for hours, but with God 10 minutes seems to be an eternity some of the time.  Psalm 46: 10 tells me to "Be still and know that I am God".  I do pray and meditate while in the stand, but my focus is so quickly shifted to the sound of rustling leaves or a faint grunt.  I realize that God does not have my full attention.

Eugene Peterson writes this in The Message; But God's not finished. He's waiting around to be gracious to you.  He's gathering strength to show mercy to you.  God takes the time to do everything right—everything.  Those who wait around for him are the lucky ones.  Isaiah 30:18

Have you ever thought that you are the lucky one to wait on the Lord.  Take some time and hurry up and wait.  You will be glad you did.
